Speed development - plyometrics

Needs analysis

Plyometric training should be arranged according to the needs and capabilities of the individual player and of the group (Chu & Myer 2013). The authors highlight the importance of each individual focusing on responsibility, concentration and follow-through to complete any given training session. Two key coaching qualities are noted by Chu and they include: common sense and experience in designing and implementing a plyometric programme. Certainly, common sense would dictate that the high intensity and thus high impact nature of certain plyometric exercises and drills are inappropriate for the child or young player and beginner. Thus, Chu & Myer (2013) stresses the need to conduct a needs analysis of the athletes before designing any programme.

This needs analysis should take into account the athlete, the athlete’s sport and the specific movements that the athlete must perform in the sport and other organisational issues (Chu& Myer 2013, Johnson et al 2011, Bompa 2000).
