Speed development - introduction and deceleration training

Introduction (continued)

In Pre-Level 1, we described the elements of speed. We also presented a broad overview of speed and in particular we described numerous drills acceleration drills including resistance acceleration using harness and external resistance. We also described several pre-planned change of direction or agility drills which allow the player to develop better mechanics of movement during pre-planned change of direction movements. Pre-Level 1 also established the connection between the three tiers of speed training, primary, secondary and tertiary where direct speed drills, plyometric drills and resistance training were all described as direct or indirect contributors to the development of better speed, be it acceleration, change of direction, speed repeatability or maximum speed. Finally, we provided guidelines for optimising the effectiveness of any speed training that is completed.
